Quick answer
After a home sleep test, the recording is returned or uploaded, checked for technical quality and interpreted by a qualified clinician. With Virtual Sleep Care, a sleep physician interprets your study and reviews it with our respiratory therapist team, and then you meet a registered respiratory therapist (RRT) virtually to go through the findings and next steps. Next steps may include treatment planning, another night of testing, or an in-lab sleep study if the recording was inadequate or the result does not explain ongoing symptoms.

Expert perspective
A result should be interpreted together with symptoms, health history and recording quality. The number helps describe what was measured, but the next step comes from the full clinical picture.
Data transfer and quality review
The testing team retrieves the recording and checks whether the required channels contain usable data.
A completed night does not automatically mean the recording is complete. The team checks whether enough reliable information was captured to answer the intended question. If sensors detached, the device showed an error, or sleep was unusually disrupted, report that when returning the equipment.
Return equipment as directed and keep a note of equipment problems or unusually poor sleep. That context can help the interpreting team decide how much confidence to place in the recording.
Clinical interpretation
A qualified clinician reviews the raw signals, automatically generated information and relevant health history.
The clinician considers the test type, recording quality, breathing-event and oxygen patterns, symptoms and the original reason for testing. Automatic scoring or a portal summary may help organize information, but it is not a substitute for this review.
Results discussion
You should receive an understandable explanation, not only a score. Ask about uncertainty, severity and whether another test is needed.
Useful questions include whether the recording was technically adequate, what the report measured, whether the findings fit the symptoms that led to testing, and what happens if the result is negative or inconclusive. This keeps the result connected to the original concern.

Treatment planning
When OSA is diagnosed, options may include positive airway pressure, oral appliance therapy, weight management, positional strategies or other clinically appropriate care.

Repeat or laboratory testing
A repeat home recording may be appropriate after technical failure. Polysomnography may be recommended when a negative or inconclusive result does not fit the clinical picture.

Ongoing support
Diagnosis is the beginning of care. Follow-up should address treatment choice, setup, adherence, symptoms and whether therapy is effective.
If the result does not support OSA or does not explain ongoing symptoms, follow-up still matters. The clinician may recommend a repeat study, laboratory testing, or assessment for another cause. Do not interpret a portal summary or automatically generated score as a final diagnosis or treatment plan.
What to expect from a results consultation
A results consultation is an opportunity to review the report with a qualified provider, explain whether the recording answered the clinical question and discuss appropriate follow-up. Have the report available and bring notes about the test night, ongoing symptoms, medicines, safety concerns and questions about treatment or further testing.
The consultation format and scope should be confirmed when booking. A consultation does not guarantee a diagnosis, a particular treatment, a specific turnaround time, eligibility or insurance reimbursement.
Stay connected to follow-up
Returning the device is not the end of the process. Confirm how results will be communicated and who to contact if symptoms worsen or a result is delayed. A clear follow-up path prevents a completed recording from becoming an unanswered question.
