Quick answer
Most CPAP supplies wear out long before the machine does. As a general guide, replace mask cushions and nasal pillows about monthly, disposable filters every two to four weeks, tubing about every three months, headgear and water chambers about every six months, and the machine about every five years. Replace any part sooner if it is cracked, stiff, discoloured or no longer seals.

Key takeaways
Inspect your mask, tubing and filters weekly and replace worn parts sooner than the schedule.
Masks and supplies are usually not covered by provincial device programs, but many insurance plans cover them on a schedule.
Worn cushions are a common cause of mask leaks and skin irritation.

Signs a part needs replacing now
- Cushions or pillows that feel stiff, sticky, torn or no longer seal
- New or worse mask leaks or red marks on your skin
- Headgear that has stretched and needs overtightening
- Tubing with holes, cracks or discolouration
- Filters that look grey or dirty
- A water chamber that is cloudy, cracked or leaking
Does insurance cover CPAP supplies in Canada?
Provincial device programs usually cover the machine but not masks and supplies; Ontario’s ADP, for example, excludes replacement masks and headgear. B.C.’s income assistance rules allow accessories to be replaced yearly. Many private plans cover supplies with limits on how often. Check your plan and see CPAP funding by province.
Keep supplies lasting longer
