Quick answer
With Virtual Sleep Care, diagnostic sleep testing usually takes 2–4 weeks, depending on when you start and complete testing. When your results are ready, you need to book your results consultation; appointments are usually available within 1–3 business days. Setting up the fingertip sensor takes a few minutes, and you record for 7 nights in your own bed. After you send the device back with the prepaid label, a sleep physician interprets the recording with our respiratory therapist team, and you then meet a registered respiratory therapist to review your results. Timelines at other providers vary. Monitoring supplied with CPAP care packages is used alongside CPAP therapy and is separate from this diagnostic test.
Timeline at a glance
Recording often spans more than one normal sleep period. An incomplete recording may need to be repeated, so follow the provider’s minimum recording-time instructions and ask whether shipping or a repeat study could affect the schedule.
- Setup: Usually several minutes to review the instructions and apply the sensors; first-time setup may take longer.
- Recording: With our diagnostic test, record for 7 nights following the testing team’s instructions. Other providers may use a different recording schedule.
- Return or upload: Complete this by the provider’s stated deadline so data-quality review can begin.
- Interpretation: A qualified clinician reviews the usable raw data with the reason for testing and relevant health information.
- Results discussion: When your results are ready, book your results consultation. Appointments are usually available within 1–3 business days. Other providers’ timelines vary.
Why results take longer than the recording
The clinical review is an important part of the timeline. A usable recording still needs to be reviewed alongside the reason for testing and relevant health history. An automatically generated summary is not, by itself, the final result or a treatment plan.
When booking, confirm the equipment delivery or collection date, testing deadline, return method, current result turnaround and follow-up appointment process. Ask who to contact if the device arrives late, a sensor will not stay in place, you are ill or you cannot complete the recording as planned. If you have a work, driving, travel or safety issue related to daytime sleepiness, raise it at the assessment rather than waiting for the report.
